Geoffrey Brand
We are deeply saddened to announce the death of our founder and President Geoffrey Brand at the age of 96. His daughter, Gill, and son, Michael were with him during his last days. He will be remembered as a brilliant conductor, particularly of brass and wind bands, and an imaginative musical entrepreneur. His live performances and rehearsals inspired players and audiences throughout the world and his outstanding recordings will continue to do so. Today's Featured Composer:John Ireland (1879-1962) | music by this composer |  John Ireland was an English composer and contemporary of Holst, Elgar, Vaughan Williams. He studied at the Royal College of Music (London) and later taught composition there. (Benjamin Britten was one of his pupils.)His most famous works are his Piano Concerto, `A London Overture' (for orchestra) and the choral work `These Things Shall Be'. He wrote two important pieces for Brass Band, namely `A Downland Suite' and `Comedy Overture', both considered to be masterpieces. Both these works have now been transcribed for Concert Band and in addition,G & M Brand Publications publish `A Maritime Overture' a fine original work written in 1944. |
